We set out on a 10-year, $300+ modernization journey aimed at re-platforming a Mainframe-based Transportation control system. We then found ourselves engineering an industry-leading Micro services platform along with many unique PAAS capabilities in order to get there.
Starting from a few hundred web services to now boasting over 4000 micro services and volumes close to a 1B transactions (API calls) per day, we had solve a host of unique engineering problems along the way; problems which led us to rethink everything. We had to invent how we manage and monitor system complexity at machine scale, build a Data Bus in order to support scalable heterogeneous data stores that would scale “state”, and even develop an SOA-centric Design language to establish a lingua franca between our analysts and our engineers. This talk will give you a glimpse into the trials and tribulations we encountered during our engineering journey re-platforming from the monolith to micro services.
