Arun Giri is the AVP Lead Engineer for IT at Union Pacific Railroad. Arun’s responsibilities there include heading the Platform Engineering Group and the Enterprise Architecture Team. Arun is also the Lead Architect for UPRR’s next-generation logistics platform, NetControl.  
Arun is a transformation specialist and has successfully led many architectural paradigm shifts at Union Pacific Railroad for the past 17 years. For the past ten years, Arun has been leading the architecture team on the company’s $300M+ effort to re-platform the transportation control system into a next-generation logistics platform that follows what is now widely known as Microservices-based architecture. This architecture was independently audited and was recognized as an "industry-leading implementation of Microservices architecture.”
Arun is also heading the Platform Engineering Group, which “Builds, Owns and Operates” some of the SOA PAAS products. These include a monitoring and transaction tracing system geared towards large-scale Microservices installations, Middleware components like API Registry and Enterprise Service/Event Bus, a BRMS framework, as well as a DataBus and many more products/frameworks.
Arun is also a practicing software engineer and architect with over 28 years of experience and vast, "full stack" expertise in building large-scale distributed systems. Arun has extensive experience in JVM internals, DataGrids, Big Data solutions, messaging, and middleware. Arun had worked/consulted as a software engineer at several fortune 500 companies before joining Union Pacific in 2002.
 
Arun is one of the pioneer members of the elite "Distinguished Technologist" group at Union Pacific Railroad. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Mysore and a Masters in MIS from the University of Nebraska. He now lives in Omaha with his wife and son.
